WASHINGTON, July 20, 2017 – After two months of being without an official communications director, President Donald Trump is expected to appoint Trump supporter and Fox News contributor Anthony Scaramucci. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer had been balancing being press secretary and communications director.
Scaramucci is best known for being a key Wall Street financier and major Republican donor. He is the founder of hedge-fund firm SkyBridge Capital. Mike Dubke was the former communications director but resigned in May. Scaramucci is currently working at the Export-Import Bank but he’s expected to leave that administration post to take the communications director job.
Scaramucci, previously expected to lead the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs under the Trump presidency. He was also a possible candidate for the ambassador position to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
White House officials warned that talks could still fall apart. Scaramucci was the subject of a CNN story about his business ties, but CNN later retracted the story. Scaramucci was spotted recently meeting with President Trump at the White House. Prior to becoming a staunch Trump supporter, he previously backed Scott Walker and then Jeb Bush. The appointment was first reported by Axios.
The announcement of the appointment comes as Trump’s legal spokesman Mark Corallo resigned. While Scaramucci does not have a proper communications portfolio, he has become an effective defender of President Trump on television.
The White House communications director is responsible for developing and promoting agenda of the US president and leading its media campaign. The director is also responsible for organizing key addresses including the State of the Union Address. Scaramucci’s hiring surprised Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who wasn’t made aware of the move until it was finalized. It’s seen as a possibility that Reince Priebus may attempt to block the appointment. Trump is continually unhappy with his communications team.
