ATLANTA, June 20, 2017 — Karen Handel won Georgia’s 6th Congressional District in a special election against Democratic rival Jon Ossoff.
Millions of dollars were dumped in by Hollywood to give Ossoff a competitive edge in the most expensive House race in United States history. Yet Ossoff still was defeated by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent. Ossoff remained up seven points in the exit polls.
Handel becomes the first woman elected in a Congressional race in Georgia state history.
“This is for little girls out there, the ones that have been underestimated all their lives,” Handel said during her victory speech.
“Tonight reminds me that anything is possible with hard work, grit and people that believe in you. Thank you for believing in me. Tonights victory is for you, for everyone in the 6th Congressional district and everyone with a dream.”
What does this mean for the Democratic Party?
