GOP Leader Steve Scalise and 4 others injured During Shooting in Virginia
A gunman identified as James T. Hodgkinson opened fire after arriving at a charity baseball event for members of Congress this morning at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia.
Hodgkinson injured Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise (R) and four others. Scalise is the House Majority Whip. Hodgkinson was shot by police.
Scalise is currently undergoing surgery after being shot in the hip. He is listed in stable condition, according to his offices.
“Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone,” his office said in a statement. “He is grateful for the brave actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues. We ask that you keep the Whip and others harmed in this incident in your thoughts and prayers.”‘
According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack.”
Members of Congress were practicing for a game that was scheduled that Thursday night at Nationals Park, an annual game played since 1909, CNN reports.
Security measures were heightened on Capitol Hill, as regular meetings and actions were postponed.
Capitol Hill Police notified congressional offices that the security presence on the Hill would be increased “out of an abundance of caution,” CNN reports.
President Donald Trump also canceled his meetings with the Department of Labor. Today is the President’s 71st birthday.
For Wednesday, The House put a halt on any votes for legislation and delayed hearings.
