Olympic Announcer Bob Costas Handing Torch to Mike Tirico

NBC Sports announced that Olympic announcer Bob Costas was no longer covering the Olympics and will be replaced by Mike Tirico. Costas made the announcement on the Today show.

Tirico’s first assignment will be the 2018 Olympic games in Korea. Costas will remain with NBC Sports and will make appearances when needed, just like Tom Brokaw does for NBC News. Tirico is currently the commentator for Sunday Night Football.

NBC’s Matt Lauer called Costas the best TV host in Olympic history. The 2016 Rio Games were Costas 11th as prime-time host. He has been a key part of the Olympic games for four decades. NBC Sports chairman Mark Lazarus released a statement.

“It is with a tremendous amount of pride that I can simultaneously express our appreciation for Bob’s stellar, record-setting run,” “while also feeling very lucky that we have someone as talented as Mike to take over as our new primetime host.”

Costas’ on-air hosting roles have earned him 27 Emmy Awards, more than any sports broadcaster in history. Costas’ coverage of the Rio Games allowed him to cover the finale of several Olympic careers, including Michael Phelps and sprinter Usain Bolt.

Tirico served as the daytime host for NBC’s coverage of the Rio Games, last year. Since 2016, Tirico has hosted Football Night in America, the U.S. Open, the Ryder Cup and provided play-by-play coverage for Sunday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, and Notre Dame football.

Tirico added: “The level and longevity of Bob’s tenure have left an indelible mark on American television and the Olympic Games. I am honored to call him a friend, humbled by this opportunity, and thankful to the many people who have helped make this possible.”

Costas will also be leaving Football Night in America and will take a smaller hosting role at the Triple Crown horse races this year and in the future, will only be at the Kentucky Derby. Next year he will replace Tirico as host of Super Bowl 52.
