Gov. Rick Perry latest to join the 2016 race
Gov. Perry touts his military background
After months of speculation and low key campaigning, former Texas Governor Rick Perry announced his bid for the White House on Thursday. The RickPerry.org website posted “Perry for President” logos. The site contained a message from Mr. Perry, saying, “I am running for president, because I know our country’s best days are ahead of us.” Perry firstreleased a video online early Thursday morning, telling voters we have the power to make our country new again.
Governor Perry gained a following among conservatives during his 16 years as governor by signing legislation restricting abortion, reduced taxes and reign in injury and personal suits. He is also expected to emphasize his jobs creation records and his decision to send Texas National Guard troops to secure the border. Governor Rick Perry was flanked by several Navy SEALs and Taya Kyle, widow of American Sniper Chris Kyle, a group that allows Perry to emphasize his five years in the Air Force. Perry enters the race struggling to make the top 10 in polls of a much-stronger Republican field, and with work to do to earn a second chance with voters. Kyle vouched for Perry in an email to supporters inviting them to the campaign kick-off.
