The face of NBC News, Brian Williams announced on Saturday that he is stepping down from the NBC Nightly News desk amid questions of his fabrication of certain stories surrounding his coverage in Iraq saying he has become a distracting news today. Williams sent a memo to fellow NBC News staffers saying he is taking himself off the broadcast for several days and fellow anchor Lester Holt will replace Williams temporarily. NBC News has remained quiet on whether Williams would return and what his future would be. In a story that aired on Nightly News last week, Williams recalled a story of how a military helicopter he was passenger in during an assignment in Iraq took on enemy fire.
However, on Wednesday, Williams told viewers he had made a mistake in recalling the incident. He and his crew were in an aircraft that was following the helicopter that was hit. NBC President Deborah Turness announced an internal review of the reporting that followed the events in Iraq. Since Williams’ apology, questions also have been raised about his claim that he saw a body or bodies in the Hurricane Katrina floodwaters that hit New Orleans in 2005. Read more at Examiner.com
