President Obama delivered the State of the Union address on Tuesday and claimed the nation is ready to turn the page from years of hardship and used his address to promote “middle class economics” in the face of a Republican controlled Congress. Obama touted the improving economy under his presidency saying that government has a role in ensuring equal opportunity for all. The address by Obama began at 9:10 p.m. in front of a joint session of the House and Senate, declaring that the state of the union is strong. Obama is attempting to set the terms of an economic debate that could continue into the 2016 race to replace him in the Oval Office.
Obama made the case that his plan to raise taxes on the wealthy Americans and financial institutions to pay for progressive priorities, favor the middle class and that middle class economics work. This was Obama’s first State of the Union Address since the November elections that brought the GOP to power in the Senate, and increased its long-standing majority in the House. President Obama also addressed new ways to fight terrorist threats after more than a decade since 9/11.
