Federal probe into Eric Garner expected to take months
FBI officials have now begun an investigation into the choke hold death of Eric Garner. Officials have not said how long this investigation will take but some say it will take months. The investigation was launched after a grand jury ended up not indicting Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo on any charges. Federal investigators access to information is restrained by a current internal NYPD investigation. ABC News spoke with former NYC Police Commissioner Ray and told them the internal investigation could take six months.
The heart of the investigation will focus mainly on whether the officer’s actions amounted to a “hate crime” as it is narrowly defined in federal law. Authorities are also investigating whether the cops are guilty of using excessive force, which is an easier case to prove because of the video of the incident. Authorities could also investigate the conduct of the Emergency Medical Technicians for providing substandard care, however they would only face civil charges and not criminal.
