President Obama addresses nation on the murder of James Foley
WASHINGTON – President Obama addressed America on the death of journalist James Foley. A video was released showing the beheading of the journalist; the FBI has confirmed the authenticity of the video. President Obama promised that “justice will be done” to ISIS who is behind the beheading of Foley.
“Today, the entire world is appalled by the brutal murder of Jim Foley by the terrorist group, ISIL,” Obama said, condemning the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant for “an act of violence that shocks the conscience of the entire world.”
The video was posted on YouTube but was quickly removed. Video titled “A Message to America” shows Mr. Foley kneeling in a desert landscape wearing an orange jumpsuit. Standing to his left is an ISIS extremist who turns out to be British. He continues speaking saying that Foley’s execution is in retaliation for the recent airstrikes against the extremists.
Obama affirmed that the United States will not change its military posture in Iraq in response to the beheading. Since the release of the video, the military has conducted nearly a dozen airstrikes on ISIS targets in Iraq. Obama condemned these attacks saying “no just god would stand for what they did yesterday and what they do every single day.”
Obama spoke from Martha’s Vineyard as he continues his annual summer vacation. President Obama phoned the parents of James Foley and told them that the nation was heartbroken at the loss of their son. Obama remarked that the freelance reporter was a man “who courageously told the stories of his fellow human beings.”
Obama continued his call for a unified new government in Iraq to fight the extremists, saying, “There has to be a common effort to extract this cancer (ISIS) so it does not spread.” The video was released on YouTube, however YouTube quickly removed it. After analyzing the video, we learned that a British man was the ISIS extremist who beheaded Foley. Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain released a statement calling the murder “shocking and depraved.”
Secretary Kerry released a statement saying, “we will continue to confront ISIL wherever it tries to spread its despicable hatred. The world must know that the United States of America will never back down in the face of such evil. ISIL and the wickedness it represents must be destroyed, and those responsible for this heinous, vicious atrocity will be held accountable.”
