Obama getting nervous after failing to comply with the Hatch Act
The Obama administration is pleading with Rep. Issa to withdraw a subpoena of a key adviser to the President. In response to the subpoena, Obama’s Counsel Neil Eggleston offered to brief Issa in regards to the role of the Office of Political Strategy and Outreach on Tuesday. According to Politico’s Lauren French. The Office director David Simas is set to testify on potential violations of the Hatch Act.
The Hatch Act of 1939, officially An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities, is a United States federal law whose main provision prohibits employees in the executive branch of the federal government, except the president, vice-president, and certain designated high-level officials of that branch, from engaging in partisan political activity.
Eggleston issued a request saying “While I am hopeful that we can work together constructively to address your stated interests, your subpoena is not helpful to these efforts. As you know, it has been the view of administrations from both political parties that summoning the President’s most senior advisors to provide public testimony raises significant separation of power concerns,” Eggleston wrote.
Issa’s staff says it is a longshot that the subpoena will be withdrawn. Issa’s spokesperson responded by saying it is “unfortunate” that the White House is just now offering a briefing after a series of requests from the Oversight Committee. The White House was “not willing to be forthcoming until we issued a subpoena to Simas,” Issa would consider lifting the request if the briefing, scheduled for Tuesday, answers each of the committee’s questions.
It is disappointing to see that the only time Obama wants to cooperate is when his legacy is threatened by being exposed for what he and his administration really is. (Con artist) I believe this law should extend to all federal employees; right now, it only covers Federal agencies. I applaud Rep. Issa on keeping the fight alive to learn the truth about President Obama’s actions including the failure to comply with the Hatch Act.
